STUDIO VISITS + MENTORSHIP

Visiting Artist · Studio Critic · Artist Mentor

Some of the most meaningful work I do happens one-on-one in another artist’s studio: looking closely, listening, asking questions, and helping artists recognize the ideas and possibilities already emerging in their work.

I work with undergraduate, graduate, emerging, and working artists through studio visits, critiques, artist talks, workshops, and ongoing mentorship.

My goal is not to tell an artist what their work should become, but to help them identify the questions already within their practice and develop the language, research, and next steps to take those questions further.

MENTORSHIP APPROACH

Every artist and every studio visit is different. Conversations may move between material and form, personal history, cultural and political context, research, artistic influences, professional development, or simply what needs to happen next in the studio.

My approach may include:

  • Close looking and individualized critique

  • Conceptual and material development

  • Identifying themes across a body of work

  • Research, artist, writer, and exhibition recommendations

  • Developing language around evolving work

  • Writing prompts and exercises

  • Presentation, scale, installation, and context

  • Concrete next steps for continued studio development

I am particularly interested in the space between critique and mentorship: rigorous conversation that challenges an artist while leaving room for them to discover their own answers.
